Flamenco opens new paths in Girona

FlamenGi celebrates its eighth edition from November 13 to 28 with the flamenco woman as the protagonist and a program that brings together artists such as Rocío Molina, Soleá Morente, Rafael Riqueni, Jorge Pardo, María Terremoto and Belén López.

Girona will once again become one of the meeting points for flamenco with the eighth edition of FlamenGi, Girona Flamenco Festival, which will be held from November 13 to 28. The event will unfold its programming throughout Girona and several municipalities in the Girona region, with a proposal that combines great figures from the flamenco scene, new generations of creators and a look especially focused on the role of women within this artistic language.

Since its birth in 2019 in the neighborhoods of Girona, FlamenGi has been consolidating itself as a cultural and social project that understands flamenco as a living, diverse and constantly transforming expression. Its programming puts internationally renowned artists in dialogue with emerging creators and talents linked to the territory, while exploring the connections between flamenco, contemporary dance, music and heritage spaces.

This desire to expand the festival's boundaries is also reflected in its territorial dimension. Girona, Figueres, Banyoles, La Bisbal d'Empordà, Blanes and Toulouse, in France, will host different proposals in an edition that maintains its commitment to bringing flamenco closer to new audiences and contexts.

Under the slogan Flamenco time with local talent , FlamenGi also claims creation linked to Catalonia and flamenco as a cultural manifestation fully rooted in the territory.

The flamenco woman takes center stage

Flamenco women will be one of the main focuses of the eighth edition. Female singers, dancers, guitarists and creators have played a fundamental role in the history and evolution of flamenco, although their contribution has often been overlooked.

FlamenGi now focuses on this legacy and, at the same time, on the artists who are contributing to transforming the genre from a contemporary perspective. Soleá Morente, Belén López, María Terremoto, Lela Soto, Rocío Molina and Águeda Saavedra will be part of a program that claims different ways of understanding flamenco and its capacity to evolve without losing the link with its roots.

More than a simple vindication of the female presence, the festival presents this edition as a look at the role that women have had in the construction of flamenco and at the way in which new generations are expanding its languages, imaginaries and scenic forms.

Soleá Morente will return to the steps of the Cathedral

The festival will once again begin in one of the most emblematic spaces in Girona. The steps of the Cathedral will regain their status as the stage for the opening ceremony, following the experience of the previous year.

The protagonist will be Soleá Morente, an artist who has built a career marked by her ability to move between flamenco and other musical languages. Her proposal, personal and difficult to classify, starts from tradition to explore new sound and scenic territories.

Morente will offer an acoustic performance specially conceived for this space on Friday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. The proposal will seek to establish a dialogue between music, architecture and the heritage of the Cathedral. Access will be free, with limited capacity.

Rocío Molina and Manuel Liñán, two contemporary looks

The collaboration with Temporada Alta will allow two of the edition's great stage productions to be incorporated into the program.

Manuel Liñán, National Dance Award winner and one of the most prominent figures in the renewal of contemporary flamenco, will present Muerta de Amor at the Teatre Jardí in Figueres. With twelve artists on stage, the show explores desire, intimacy, human relationships and the need to connect with others through a large-format choreographic proposal.

The second major production will be Calentamiento , by Rocío Molina, which will arrive at the Teatre Municipal de Girona. The dancer and choreographer directs and choreographs this new creation, with co-direction and texts by Pablo Messiez and musical direction by Niño de Elche.

Molina, one of the most personal and transgressive artists in current flamenco, once again explores the possibilities of the body, movement and music to question the traditional limits of the genre and open it to other forms of stage creation.
