Maria Permanyer, between love, mourning and memory
Maria Permanyer draws on the last years shared with musician and co-founder of Mishima, Marc Lloret, to reflect on loss, memories and creations that remain beyond life.
ACVIC Center for Contemporary Arts opens on September 4th Choosing Love , an exhibition by Maria Permanyer built on the experience shared with Marc Lloret during the last years of the musician's life. The exhibition, which can be visited until October 9th, is born as an intimate tribute to the co-founder of Mishima and as a reflection on love, death, mourning and the capacity of memory to keep a presence alive.
The project originated from a shared decision. When Marc Lloret was diagnosed with cancer, the couple decided to face the process with love. This choice marked the last three years of their life together and is at the center of an exhibition that does not understand grief solely as an experience of loss, but also as a space from which to remember, create and give continuity to a bond.
Choosing love is, in this sense, a project written and lived together. Permanyer also recovers some of Marc Lloret's literary and musical creations that never saw the light of day, incorporating them into a journey in which his voice continues to be present. Music, which was an essential part of the musician's life and the couple's shared history, accompanies the visitor where words and images are no longer enough.
The exhibition combines photographs and texts by Maria Permanyer Bailac with texts, audios and music by Marc Lloret Isiegas. The tour also incorporates music by Lucía Fumero, Joan Garriga, Maestro Espada, Mishima, Robe Iniesta and Los Toreros Muertos, as well as pieces created by Marc Lloret with Dani Vega and Pau Vallvé. Added to this set are the words of Francesc Torralba, Rainer Maria Rilke and Viktor E. Frank, which broaden the reflection on love, loss and the human condition.
Beyond the personal tribute, the proposal raises a universal question: what remains of a person when they are no longer there? In this space of memory, words, songs, photographs, memories and works acquire a new dimension. They are no longer just witnesses to a shared past, but forms of presence capable of maintaining an active dialogue with those who have disappeared.
The exhibition avoids radically separating love from death. On the contrary, it places them in the same emotional territory, in which loving also means preserving, remembering and giving value to what has been experienced. Mourning thus appears as a process that transforms memories and modifies the way we inhabit time, but which can also open spaces for creation.
Through the combination of photography, literature and music, Maria Permanyer constructs a story that starts from a deeply personal experience to arrive at a shared reflection. Choosing Love speaks of Marc Lloret, but also of all those people who have experienced loss and have sought in art, memory or words a way to continue being linked to those who are no longer there.
