Angélica Chavarro and the art of inhabiting the pause
There are transitional spaces where the familiar begins to disappear while something new is still taking shape. It is precisely at this threshold, at this intersection, that Habitar lo intermedio (Inhabiting the Intermediate ), the exhibition by Colombian artist Angélica Chavarro Franco, is located. It can be visited at LA Galería in Bogotá from August 6, 2026, and is curated by Fernando Cuevas Ulitzsch.
The exhibition stems from the concept of liminality, understood as that borderline state in which a previous form dissolves and the next remains undefined. Chavarro transforms this concept into an essentially sensory experience. His installations are not intended merely to be contemplated: they seek to envelop the visitor and lead them toward a state of pause, attention, and introspection.
Textiles occupy a central place in this exploration. Threads, fibers, warps, altered surfaces, stains, and strokes construct a kind of intimate cartography in which each element seems to contain a temporal dimension. The material retains the traces of its creation and transforms the act of looking into a contemplative experience. Color, far from functioning as a mere artistic resource, defines emotional spaces; texture, for its part, acquires an almost geographical dimension.
This relationship between matter and inner experience is a constant in Chavarro's work. Born in Bogotá in 1976, the artist holds a Master's degree in Visual Arts from the National University of Colombia and has developed research that connects creation, meditation, and spirituality. Her practice incorporates painting, drawing, printmaking, writing, weaving, and installation—media she uses to explore issues related to the body, mind, thought, silence, and consciousness.
In her works, the creative process thus acquires a contemplative dimension. Natural fibers, embroidery, pigments, and texts appear as elements capable of making visible that which normally remains outside the field of perception. In previous projects, Chavarro has defined some of these intricate structures as authentic "landscapes of thought," intuitive constructions in which the accumulation of layers and stitches functions as a record of an inner experience.
The artist has also developed immersive installations. Metaphor of Mystery , presented at the Colonial Museum of Bogotá in 2024, consisted of 82 fabrics made of natural fibers and LED light, creating a penetrable space that reinforced her interest in transforming the work into a bodily experience.
In Habitar lo intermedio (Inhabiting the Intermediate) , this search shifts toward a territory where the individual and the spatial ultimately converge. The repetitions of the pattern, the lines, and the stains generate a visual rhythm that functions almost like breathing.
The exhibition ultimately proposes a pause, a moment to stop, a dialogue, a moment to reflect. In contrast to the breakneck pace of contemporary life, Chavarro champions the slow, deliberate pace of observation and the possibility of lingering for a few moments with that which remains unnamed. His work does not attempt to resolve uncertainty, but rather to transform it into a habitable space.
