The Shadow, by Joan Crous, becomes a book

The cloister of the Monastery of Sant Esteve in Banyoles hosted the presentation of the book dedicated to L'Ombra , the project by Joan Crous, on Tuesday, September 8, in an activity parallel to the exhibition that allowed us to delve deeper into the ideas and questions that run through one of his most ambitious proposals.
The publication was born as an extension of the artistic project and, at the same time, as a space for memory and reflection. Beyond documenting a work conceived over several years, the book expands its conceptual and visual universe and allows us to approach a process in which matter, time and memory are in permanent transformation.
The presentation brought together artist Joan Crous with Ricard Planas, art critic and editor of Bonart , and Fernando Castro Flórez, art critic and exhibition curator. The conversation, moderated by Natàlia Chocarro, cultural manager and art critic, served to relate different readings of L'Ombra and delve deeper into the multiple layers that make up the project.
At the heart of the dialogue was a conception of the work of art as an open process, far removed from a strictly formal reading. In Crous's case, matter acquires a dimension linked to the passage of time and its capacity to preserve traces, but also to lose them, modify them and generate new ones. The shadow thus becomes a metaphor for what remains and, at the same time, for what inevitably escapes.
Fragility also occupied a central space in the reflection. Crous's work starts from materials and forms that evoke permanence, but which are subject to processes of deterioration, change and disappearance. This tension between permanence and transformation contributes to constructing the meaning of a project that interrogates the relationship between human beings, memory and time.
In this context, the book presented at the monastery does not limit itself to acting as a catalogue for the exhibition. It is proposed as a new dimension of L'Ombra , capable of preserving the images, concepts and voices that have accompanied the project. Paper, photography and text introduce another way of approaching a work that also speaks of the traces we leave and those that time ends up erasing.
The space chosen for the presentation reinforced this dimension. The cloister of the Monastery of Sant Esteve, loaded with history and memory, provided the framework for a conversation that linked Crous's contemporary project with an architecture also marked by the passage of time. The dialogue between the work, the book and the space turned the presentation into a new extension of L'Ombra , beyond the physical limits of the exhibition.
