The Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo presents Theatre of the Mind , Lenz Geerk's first solo exhibition at an Italian institution. The exhibition, which runs until October 11, 2026, offers a broad overview of the artist's career and brings together works in which human figures, objects, and landscapes coexist in settings imbued with a unique psychological intensity.

In Geerk's paintings, nothing seems to happen explicitly. The bodies silently occupy the canvas, trapped in poses that convey a tension difficult to decipher. Similarly, his still lifes and interiors are far from being simple representations of the everyday: each element seems to contain an introspective dimension, as if behind the apparent calm lies an emotional experience that remains off-screen.

Through a palette of thick, carefully modulated colors, the artist constructs dreamlike images. His scenes seem suspended in their own time, far removed from both conventional narrative and any obvious resolution. A constant ambiguity exists within them, inviting the viewer to fill in what the painting deliberately leaves open.

Theatre of the Mind allows us to explore some of Geerk's recurring motifs and observe how his pictorial language has been constructed through attention, time, and emotional subtlety. Portraits, still lifes, and various everyday scenes comprise a universe in which stillness never equates to an absence of movement. Subtle changes in gesture, tone, or color introduce a psychological tension that transforms the seemingly banal into something unsettling.

His figures don't seem to represent specific characters or belong to a particular story. They are, rather, presences suspended in a moment. A glance, a posture, or the distance between two bodies can become the clue to an inner life that never fully reveals itself. Geerk thus places the viewer before scenes that seem familiar, but which, at the same time, are strangely inaccessible.

This strategy also permeates his objects and spaces. A room, a table, or a collection of everyday items acquires an almost theatrical dimension. The painting functions as a stage on which something could happen, even if that event never actually occurs. The interest lies precisely in that interval: in the moment before, in the waiting, on the border between presence and absence.

Rather than relying on dramatic narrative, Geerk finds meaning in the margins of experience. His paintings speak of intimate moments, silences, lingering gazes, and emotional states that defy easy definition. The exhibition's title points precisely to this inner territory: the canvas as a stage for the mind and painting as a way of making visible that which cannot always be expressed in words.

In this sense, Theatre of the Mind presents painting as an open and continuous process. The works do not seek to offer definitive answers, but rather to generate a space of perception in which time seems to slow down and the gaze takes center stage. Each scene demands attention, because its meanings emerge gradually, through nuances that may go unnoticed at first glance.

The exhibition thus confirms Lenz Geerk's commitment to the possibilities of painting for addressing the complexities of perception and human experience. In his images, the everyday becomes a psychological territory, and stillness a form of tension. A theater without a defined plot where each viewer must inevitably confront what occurs within their own gaze.
