Teresa Vall Palou, a singular voice of Catalan abstraction, dies
His work, built from gesture, color and matter, had recently been vindicated with exhibitions promoted by the Miguel Marcos Gallery and bonart, as well as with the publication of a catalog.
The Lleida painter Teresa Vall Palou has died at the age of 75, leaving a consolidated legacy within contemporary Catalan abstraction. Her work, rigorous and at the same time intuitive, developed a language of her own in which nature, biology, gesture and color became the main axes of a plastic research sustained for more than three decades. Her compositions, built from matter and the strength of the stroke, transmit an intense expressive charge and a profound look at the tensions and emotions of life experience.
The artist's death comes just a few months after his career experienced a new boost in recognition. That same year, the Miguel Marcos Gallery in Barcelona hosted the exhibition El vitalisme del color , Vall Palou's first solo show in this space, which allowed the rediscovery of a significant selection of his recent production. At the same time, bonart, the Miguel Marcos Gallery and the Centro de Arte Tomás y Valiente in Fuenlabrada had collaborated in the dissemination of his work, after an exhibition held in Madrid, and work was currently underway on the edition of a monographic catalogue that will be published soon.
Self-taught for much of her career, Teresa Vall Palou trained in drawing and painting at the Cercle de Belles Arts School in Lleida, where she learned from Ernest Ibáñez. She later expanded her knowledge through specialized courses in techniques such as tempera, watercolor, oil and acrylic, as well as in experimenting with various materials, including ceramics, wood and glass.
Since the mid-nineties he has developed a continuous exhibition career with numerous individual and collective exhibitions in Catalonia, the rest of Spain, France and Germany. His work is part of collections and institutional spaces such as the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, the Public Library of Lleida or Acció Cultural del País Valencià.
In addition to painting, Vall Palou explored disciplines such as engraving, raku and sculpture, always from a desire for formal research. His production is characterized by an organic abstraction where color and matter constantly dialogue, turning the canvas into a space of energy and memory.
