The University of Girona (UdG) has recently formalized the purchase of part of the Convent de les Butinyanes, an architectural complex made up of eight buildings located on Carrer dels Alemanys in Girona. This acquisition, which cost 2.2 million euros, was carried out after the Girona City Council approved the change of use of the space in February and the Generalitat's Urban Planning Commission authorized the change in March.
The rector of the UdG, Josep Calbó, has highlighted the importance of this purchase to decongest the Barri Vell Campus, which currently has no other expansion options. Calbó has described this acquisition as a "strategic opportunity" for the future of the institution. The buildings, which are currently in disuse, will be remodeled to house administrative services and research spaces, with the aim of improving the educational and research offer of the UdG.
The works to adapt the spaces will be carried out in several phases, taking into account the state of conservation of the buildings. The UdG will start with those that are in the best condition, in order to be able to open them to the public as soon as possible. This initiative is part of the assessment of the first 100 days of the rector's term, presented at the beginning of April, where the need to increase the space available for the university community was highlighted.
