Cultural manager Maribel López (Barcelona, 1973), director of ARCO Madrid since 2018, will be proposed this Tuesday as the new director of the Miró Foundation, beginning a new stage at the helm of one of Barcelona's most emblematic artistic institutions. Her appointment will replace Marko Daniel, who is leaving the position before the end of the period for which he had recently renewed.
With this appointment, López will become the third person to direct the foundation created by Joan Miró, an institution that safeguards the artist's legacy and carries out intense exhibition, educational and research activity, with an annual budget of close to 14 million euros and a team of around 80 people.
The election took place after a particularly competitive selection process. In the final phase, Maribel López's candidacy prevailed over two other candidates with a solid track record in the museum field, after an extensive debate between the evaluation committee and several members of the Foundation's Board of Trustees.
The committee in charge of the process was made up of representatives from the Foundation itself, the Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council, the Ministry of Culture and the Miró Estate. It also had the advice of a commission of experts formed by prominent professionals in the sector, including Manuel Segade, director of the Museu Nacional Centre d'Art Reina Sofia; Joan Oller, general director of the Palau de la Música Catalana; Cécile Godefroy, curator of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and Rosa Maria Malet, former director of the Miró Foundation and one of the main specialists in the artist's work.
The competition especially valued the professional excellence of the candidates, their knowledge of the work and legacy of Joan Miró, their experience in managing cultural institutions, their ability to lead and manage teams, as well as their international projection and solvency in economic and strategic management.
The contract provides for an initial term of four years, with the possibility of a single renewal for a further four years, subject to approval by the Board of Trustees. The gross annual remuneration for the position will be 115,000 euros.
