Throughout the month of July, an appliance store in the Santa Eugènia neighborhood of Girona will become an unexpected exhibition space. From July 2 to 31, the Tien21 establishment, located at Carrer de Santa Eugènia, 106, will host the screening of Art Make-Up , one of the most emblematic works by the American artist Bruce Nauman, in an initiative promoted by Bòlit, Girona Contemporary Art Center, in collaboration with MACBA.

The proposal is part of A Museum Outside the Museum , a project by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya and MACBA that aims to transfer forty works from the MACBA Collection to everyday spaces throughout the territory. The aim is to bring contemporary art closer to new audiences and encourage a more direct, spontaneous and everyday relationship with the works, temporarily removing them from traditional museum spaces.

In this context, the pieces on display—reproductions made specifically for conservation reasons—occupy settings as diverse as libraries, shops, sports facilities, pharmacies, cafes or public transport. The aim is to transform spaces of passage, waiting or meeting into places of cultural discovery, where the artistic experience arises naturally and unexpectedly.

According to the program director, Martí Manen, the initiative also invites us to reflect on the physical and symbolic limits of the museum. By placing the works in everyday contexts, they dialogue with new uses, new audiences and new forms of interpretation, opening the door to more intimate and accessible experiences.

An art network that extends throughout Catalonia

A museum outside the museum is a shared initiative between MACBA and the twenty-five visual arts centers that form part of the Public System of Visual Arts Facilities (SPEAV), promoted by the Department of Culture. The project reinforces cooperation between institutions and claims the right of all citizens to access contemporary creation, regardless of where they are located.

The first phase of the program has been deployed simultaneously in a wide variety of spaces in Catalonia. In addition to the Tien21 store in Girona, the works have also been installed in Vic City Hall, the Alella Municipal Sports Complex, the Enric Pintado Dental Center in Manresa, the Sàbat Pastry Shop in Sant Cugat del Vallès, the Ignasi Iglésias – Can Fabra Library in Barcelona, Hache Ungles in Mataró, Öss Kaffe in Barcelona, the Biblioteca de Catalunya, several pharmacies in Cardedeu, Salvador Dalí's birthplace in Figueres, hairdressers in Valls, the Martorell urban bus line, an Abacus establishment in Terrassa and the Terra Baixa Public Library in Vendrell.

El Bòlit expands the project in the fall

The Bòlit's participation in this initiative will continue after the summer. In the autumn, the art center will begin a new collaboration with the Carles Rahola Public Library in Girona, which will host the presentation of Disagreements: On Art, Politics and the Public Sphere in the Spanish State , an interview conducted by Jesús Carrillo with Manel Clotl in 2004.

With this new proposal, the Bòlit continues to explore ways to bring art and contemporary thought closer to citizens, reinforcing the role of cultural facilities as open, permeable spaces connected to everyday life.
