On June 3rd and 4th, Barcelona will become the meeting point for the debate on the future of local museums with the celebration of the Conference of the Network of Local Museums of the Barcelona Provincial Council, which will take place at the Espai Bonnemaison. This year's edition focuses on the social dimension of cultural facilities and their capacity to become spaces for participation, inclusion and community building, in line with the emerging model of the "social museum".

Professionals from the cultural sector, researchers and those responsible for heritage facilities will share experiences and reflections around the same challenge: how to actively involve citizens in the definition and development of museum projects, in a context of increasingly diverse and complex societies.

The inaugural session will feature a presentation by Ismael Blanco, researcher at the Institute of Government and Public Policies and professor of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, who will address the role of cultural institutions in generating community bonds and promoting social and territorial cohesion.

Throughout the two days, several cases and experiences of museums and heritage centers that are already incorporating citizen participation as a central axis of their projects will be presented. Among the speakers are representatives of museums in the territory such as the Barcelona History Museum, the Empordà Museum and the Montcada i Reixac Museum, who will share practices of co-creation and work with the community.

One of the highlights of the program will be the intervention of Mona Jamil, from the Migration Museum in London, who will present international experiences of civic participation and co-creation. Her contribution will highlight how museums can evolve from simple storytelling spaces to platforms where citizens also construct and redefine cultural narratives, incorporating traditionally underrepresented voices.

The conference will close with a round table that will bring together professionals from the sector to debate the main challenges and opportunities for the future of museums in terms of participation, community and social transformation, with the aim of consolidating these facilities as active agents of cohesion in the territory.
