The La Mercè Cultural Centre begins a new stage with the appointment of Jordi Armengol Roura (Santa Coloma de Farners, 1971) as director. Doctor in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona, Armengol brings a solid career that combines cultural management, artistic practice and teaching. Linked to the Girona scene for years, he served as coordinator of the centre between 2011 and 2017 and directed the Girona Municipal School of Art.
Its proposal aims to consolidate La Mercè as a key space for training, creation and cultural projection, with both a local and national vocation. Located in the heart of the Barri Vell, the center wants to strengthen its role in dialogue with other facilities such as the Teatre Municipal de Girona or El Modern, promoting a transversal programming that integrates visual arts, contemporary thought, literature, performing arts and popular culture.
According to the Councilor for Culture, Quim Ayats Bartrina, this relief is part of a broader process of renovation of the city's main cultural facilities. A commitment that combines artistic excellence and commitment to cultural mediation, with the aim of making culture more open, accessible and connected to citizens.
The new direction is based on five axes: territorial projection, support for emerging creativity, excellence and collaboration, artistic training and transversality. Within this framework, La Mercè wants to become a cultural node of reference, capable of accompanying new talents and, at the same time, reinforcing consolidated projects, weaving alliances with institutions from all over Catalonia and the Mediterranean.
