The drawings of Cesc, Roser Capdevila and Pilarín Bayés constitute much more than a graphic testimony of an era. Over the past few decades, their works have drawn a visual cartography of Catalonia, its landscapes and its people, its daily customs and social transformations. With different styles and trajectories, the three cartoonists have built a shared imaginary that is part of the collective memory.

The exhibition Ideas, drawings and oddities. A pre-exhibition of Cesc, Roser Capdevila and Pilarín Bayés , presented at the ACVIC. Centre for Contemporary Arts, proposes an approach to a lesser-known dimension of their production. Curated by Sílvia Ferran and Christian Inaraja, the exhibition focuses on the creative processes, the first drawings, notebooks and work blocks, as well as those pieces and graphic explorations that allow us to discover other ways of understanding their practice.

Cesc (Barcelona, 1927-2006), Roser Capdevila (Barcelona, 1939) and Pilarín Bayés (Vic, 1941) share an extraordinary capacity for observation and a desire to describe the world through the pencil. Their images have represented a diverse society, from traditional rural trades to urban professions, from the fields and landscapes of Catalonia to the neighborhoods of Barcelona. They have also portrayed hospitals, transport, culture, customs and social inequalities, without leaving out politicians, the wealthy classes and the humblest people.

  • Work by Roser Capdevila.

This gaze, both physical and emotional, has contributed to documenting the country's recent history. However, his drawings do not limit themselves to recording reality. His interpretation, humor, narrative ability and attention to everyday details transform each scene into a particular reading of its time.

Although Cesc belongs to a generation earlier than that of Capdevila and Bayés, the three of them agreed on a way of observing and representing the environment. Each one did so from their own language and in different fields: illustration and children's books in the case of Capdevila and Bayés, and graphic humor in Cesc's. Their trajectories gave rise to unmistakable styles, but they share a clear descriptive, humorous and, in many cases, pedagogical intention.

The exhibition also delves into the origins of these graphic identities. The first drawings reveal different paths, conditioned by the contexts, places and circumstances of each artist, in addition to their own creativity. Based on these differences, Ideas, Drawings and Oddities explores how an artistic voice is configured and how the practice of drawing transforms over time.

  • Cesc's work.

From the initial notebooks to formats that exceed the limits of paper, the exhibition highlights the search for resources and the expressive possibilities of a medium that, in the hands of these creators, becomes a privileged tool for interpreting the world. The apparently simple gesture of the pencil opens a space for experimentation in which ideas take shape, details acquire prominence and reality becomes a story.
