Two artistic languages on the threshold of the symbolic

Two artistic languages on the threshold of the symbolic
bonart buenos aires - 10/10/26

Traces of time and landscapes that seem to exist beyond visible reality. Between these two realms unfolds Thresholds and Constellations , an exhibition that brings together works by Mariana Brihuega and Andrea Bloise created between 2017 and 2026 at the Luis Perlotti Sculpture Museum in Buenos Aires. The exhibition establishes a dialogue between two artists who share their origins in wood carving and a common sculptural training, but who have developed their own distinct artistic universes, articulated through different languages and sensibilities.

In Mariana Brihuega's work, matter acquires a narrative and symbolic dimension. Her series Hinges and Cracks begins with everyday objects marked by use and the passage of time—doors, windows, suitcases, walking sticks, and crutches—to explore issues related to fracture, reconstruction, and change. These elements, stripped of their usual function or transformed into new structures, evoke experiences of rupture and processes of personal transformation. References to the tarot expand this investigation into an imaginary world in which symbols function as instruments for interpreting experience and its multiple possibilities.

Andrea Bloise, for her part, constructs a pictorial poetics in which landscape and nature move away from literal representation to delve into imaginary territories. Her compositions combine organic forms, invented architectures, and cosmic allusions in settings of metaphysical resonance. Attention to detail and chromatic intensity contribute to generating atmospheres in which the recognizable coexists with the enigmatic, while painting becomes a space open to perception, reverie, and the exploration of alternative realities.

The encounter between these two artists revolves around the notion of the threshold, understood as a place of transition between states, experiences, and forms of perception. While Brihuega finds in objects the material memory of transformations, Bloise opens windows onto mental landscapes where the imagination reorganizes the visible world. Their approaches, distinct in their procedures and results, share a common desire to explore what lies hidden beneath the surface of things.
