Rajadell opens a new museum dedicated to the memory of the municipality
The new museum proposal, installed in the old Rectory, recovers the town's material, natural and intangible heritage and joins the map of new museums in Catalonia.
Rajadell adds a new museum to the cultural map of Catalonia. The municipality of Bages has opened the doors of a facility dedicated to preserving, documenting and explaining local memory based on the town's heritage and the history of the old Rectory, the building that houses the new space.
The inauguration was held on Sunday 27 September with a festive day open to the community, which included institutional speeches, performances by the trabucaires and bastoners of Rajadell and visits to the new facilities. The event was attended by, among others, the mayor of Rajadell, Joan Carles Lluch; the director of the Territorial Services of the Department of Culture in Central Catalonia, Xavier Cano, and the head of the Technical Section of the Cultural Heritage Office of the Barcelona Provincial Council, Teresa Reyes.
More than a space dedicated solely to preserving objects, the new museum proposes a transversal reading of the municipality's heritage. The old rooms of the Rectory coexist with ethnographic objects and testimonies that allow us to reconstruct different episodes in the history of Rajadell, in a journey that incorporates both the material and natural heritage and the intangible dimension of local culture.
Among the contents that form part of the project are the traditions of the batoners, the Gospel Campus, the memory of the old biscuit factory or the stories linked to the presence of the maquis and the coexistence with the inhabitants of the municipality. The museum thus recovers episodes and expressions of collective life that contribute to building a diverse local identity.
The building also has its own heritage value. Rajadell City Council acquired the old Rectory in 2019 with a grant from the Barcelona Provincial Council and during 2019 and 2020, rehabilitation work was carried out on it. Subsequently, the project progressed with the protection of the property as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest (BCIL), the documentation and expansion of the collection and the definition of the museological and museographic project.
The transformation of the Rectory into a cultural facility has been supported by the Cultural Heritage Office of the Barcelona Provincial Council, which has directly participated in the museumization process with technical and financial support since 2022. The project has also received aid from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the State, and has represented an investment of approximately 200,000 euros.
