Alejandro Monge's sculpture is born from the desire to take matter to its limits and turn each piece into a new challenge. At 3 Punts Galeria, as part of the Barcelona Gallery Weekend, the artist presents a selection of works that reveal a demanding sculptural practice, built on precision, experimentation and a particular obsession with control. Until October 31, this exhibition tour allows you to enter a universe where technique is no longer a tool at the service of form to become an essential part of the thought of the work.
Monge finds sculpture to be a particularly fertile territory because it allows him to constantly set new challenges. Paper, steel, marble, cement or resin cease to be materials with certain properties and become fields of possibilities. Particularly significant are the works in cement and tinted resins, the result of technically complex processes that, in some cases, the artist has developed or invented to respond to the specific needs of each piece.
This way of working explains an important part of his work: each sculpture is a problem that needs to be solved. But it is not just a technical problem. The solution must necessarily lead to a beautiful form and, at the same time, to a work with enough conceptual force to sustain itself beyond its virtuosity. It is here that Monge's sculpture manages to escape the simple demonstration of skill.
There is, however, another dimension that is less visible and perhaps more revealing: solitude. Converting solitude into content implies assuming the workspace as a place of concentration, but also as a territory of conflict. The artist recognizes the need to control down to the last detail. This desire for control can be understood as a virtue linked to exigency, but also as a tension that inevitably accompanies the creative process.
In this sense, Monge's works can be read as the result of a permanent negotiation between control and matter. The artist imposes conditions, experiments, corrects and seeks precision, but materials also have their own resistances and accidents. Cement does not always respond as expected, resin transforms light and color, steel imposes its hardness and marble preserves the memory of time. Sculpting is, therefore, controlling, but also accepting what escapes control.
At 3 Punts Galeria, this tension turns the exhibition into an approach to contemporary sculpture that does not renounce either beauty or technical complexity. Monge does not seem interested in simplifying the processes, but rather in assuming their difficulty as an inseparable part of the work. The result are pieces that demand to be observed not only for what they represent or suggest, but also to understand the physical and mental journey that has been necessary to get there.
