The Thyssen Museum in Sant Feliu takes shape
The monastery's renovation will begin in late 2026 or early 2027 and has an execution period of eighteen months, with the aim of the museum opening its doors in mid-2028.
The project for the future Thyssen Museum in Sant Feliu de Guíxols enters a new stage with the tender for the interior renovation works of the monastery, budgeted at 9.1 million euros. The City Council plans to award the works between the end of November and the beginning of December and start them at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2027. The execution period will be eighteen months, so the council places the opening of the museum in mid-2028.
This action constitutes the first of the two phases planned to complete the overall project of the Monestir de les Arts, an initiative that aims to position Sant Feliu de Guíxols as a new cultural hub in the country. The total budget of the project amounts to 12.9 million euros, of which this first intervention assumes approximately 70%. The mayor, Carles Motas, considers the tender an "important step" to definitively materialize the project.
The first phase will focus mainly on adapting the interior of the monastery to ensure its use as a museum. Of the 9.1 million euros planned, 6.2 million will be allocated to adapting the building and 1.2 million to actions in its surroundings. The City Council will contribute 2.1 million, while the rest of the investment will come from other administrations and entities.
An essential part of the works will be the adaptation of the building to the requirements necessary to house first-class works of art. Among the planned actions are the renovation of the windows and, especially, the installation of the necessary air conditioning systems to guarantee adequate conservation conditions. The intervention will allow both the Thyssen Museum and the other exhibition halls planned for the monastery to be put into operation.
The museum will, however, be just one of the pieces of the future Monastery of the Arts. The project proposes to take advantage of the entire building to develop a broader cultural program, with spaces for other exhibitions, an educational area and an interpretation space dedicated to the monastery itself. According to Motas, the Thyssen will not occupy 100% of the building, which will allow the cultural uses of the facility to be expanded.
The architectural project, developed by Nieto Sobejano, has undergone several modifications since it was presented in 2020. At that time, the first phase was valued at around 7 million euros and also incorporated the construction of a large "cube" in the Abbey courtyard, designed as an entrance hall to the museum. The initial forecast placed the Thyssen opening in the spring of 2023.
This architectural element, however, will be left out of the first phase that is now being tendered and reserved for a second stage of the project. The current priority is to complete the interior renovation of the monastery and guarantee the necessary conditions for the future museum to become operational.
With this new calendar, Sant Feliu de Guíxols faces a decisive stage in making a long-announced project a reality, which has been evolving both in terms of deadlines and budget. The aim of the council is that, after eighteen months of work, the Thyssen Museum can finally open its doors in mid-2028 and become the hub of a new cultural space articulated around the monastery.
