The landscape enters the work
Roger Vilà and Gemma Jané Tarragó explore, from different languages, the connections between artistic creation, matter and nature in the Pahissa del Marquet.
The territory can be looked at, explored and inhabited, but it can also become artistic material. This autumn, the Pahissa del Marquet – Arts-Letters-Nature, in the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park, proposes two exhibitions that start precisely from this relationship between landscape and creation. Roger Vilà and Gemma Jané Tarragó present two ways of transforming the environment into an artistic experience, either through the construction of imaginary universes or the extraction of the colors that the land itself hides.
From September 12th until November 22nd, the rooms of the Pahissa will host 3Dé , by Roger Vilà, and De la Terra al color , by Gemma Jané Tarragó. Two formally very different proposals that share the same desire: to question the way we observe the landscape and establish a dialogue between artistic practice and the natural environment.
In Room I, Roger Vilà presents 3Dé , a project that starts from painting but rejects its conventional limits. The artist combines painting, engraving, collage and sculpture to build installations and dioramas in which the images abandon the flat surface and acquire volume, depth and physical presence. The different elements configure scenarios that seem to have emerged from a world between waking and dreaming, imaginary spaces that invite the visitor to enter them.
In this proposal, painting no longer means just working on a canvas. Painting becomes space, architecture and atmosphere, and the viewer becomes part of a visual journey that expands the possibilities of representation. The title itself, 3Dé , refers to this desire to bring two-dimensionality towards an experience constructed in three dimensions.
Gemma Jané Tarragó's gaze is more directly linked to the materiality of the territory. From Earth to Color , which occupies Room II, the Espai Escala and the Patio within the Art and Territory cycle, starts from an element as everyday as it is often ignored: the ground we walk on. The artist travels through different landscapes and collects soil and stones that she later transforms by hand into pigments.
The process involves crushing, sifting and processing the materials until they are converted into colours that then give rise to paintings, papers and installations. In this way, the landscape ceases to be an external image and is physically incorporated into the work. Each hue contains the imprint of a specific place and refers to a certain geological history, but also to the transformations caused by human activity.
The project thus emphasizes a chromatic dimension of the territory that often goes unnoticed. The colors of the earth, extracted directly from the environment, allow us to reconstruct a sensitive geography in which matter, memory and perception are closely linked. Looking at the landscape means, in this case, also looking at what is under our feet.
The two exhibitions therefore share the same attitude of listening to the environment, despite starting from opposite artistic procedures. If Vilà constructs impossible landscapes from painting and space, Jané Tarragó extracts from the landscape the materials with which to elaborate his work. In both cases, however, nature ceases to be a simple backdrop and becomes an active part of the artistic experience.
The joint opening will take place on Sunday, September 20, although the exhibitions will open to the public from Saturday, September 12.
