Contemporary art finds new spaces in heritage

From artistic interventions in Romanesque spaces to projects like 'Kin Too', ancient religious architectures are transformed into settings for dialogue, research and contemporary creation.

Contemporary art finds new spaces in heritage

The Chapel of Santa Justa and Rufina in Lliçà d'Amunt hosted BBP Romànic , a work by Jordi Benito dated September 5, 1980. The piece, linked to a moment of transformation in artistic practices, established a dialogue between contemporary creation and a space with a marked historical and architectural charge.

Benito's intervention took the Romanesque setting of the chapel as a starting point to explore the relationships between art, heritage and memory, placing the work in a space that expanded and conditioned its reading. The result was an encounter between past and present that invited us to observe how a piece could acquire new meanings in relation to the context in which it was placed.

This type of relationship between contemporary art and heritage spaces continues to be valid in current projects such as Kin Too , an exhibition promoted by Spirit Vessel that was presented in the desecrated church of Sant Feliu de Lladó. The show brought together works by Michele Gabriele, Monia Ben Hamouda, Andrew Birk, Jordi Mitjà and Sahatsa Jauregi in a second, expanded version of the project, turning the former religious space into a stage for dialogue with contemporary artistic practices.

Based in Espinavessa, Spirit Vessel moved an exhibition outside its usual space for the first time, as part of a new stage as a gallery and artist representative. Curator Sira Pizà conceived "Kin Too" as a small laboratory in which artists with diverse practices could dialogue, experiment and incorporate new elements based on the specific context of the space.

The project also opted for a gallery model far removed from traditional urban circuits, based on a smaller number of exhibitions and longer periods of research, production and support. A way of understanding gallery practice that seeks to make each project an opportunity for growth and a step forward in the artists' careers.
