Memory and narrative, photography as a construction of Puebla
The Amparo Museum in Puebla presents "Memory and Narrative: Photography in Puebla ," an exhibition organized to commemorate its 35th anniversary. The exhibition offers an approach to the photographic history of the city and its surroundings from a perspective that moves beyond a strictly chronological and encyclopedic narrative. Running until August 24, 2026, the exhibition brings together photographs produced in Puebla from the mid-19th century to the fourth decade of the 20th century, focusing on the small stories that these images have constructed and transmitted over time.
Rather than offering a comprehensive history of photography in Puebla, the exhibition focuses on the micro-histories contained within the images and their capacity to shape different ways of seeing and understanding the territory. The photographs thus allow us to trace how identity associations linked to the cultural space of Puebla have been constructed through everyday scenes, events, places, and people.

The selection comes from close collaboration with important public and private collections that hold photographic archives of Puebla. The collection brings together works by residents and visitors alike, professional and amateur photographers, renowned artists and anonymous creators. From diverse perspectives, these images transform concrete experiences into visual narratives that can be shared and passed down through generations.
In this exploration, photography ceases to be understood solely as a documentary record of the past. The exhibition presents it as an active device for memory, but also as a tool capable of intervening in the construction of the future. Each image participates in a particular way of making visible who we are, how we want to be perceived, and what relationship we establish with the place we inhabit.

Memory and narrative. Photography in Puebla thus proposes viewing photographs not only as testimonies of an era, but as narratives that transform the experience of a territory into collective memory and imagination. It is a reflection on the capacity of images to preserve the past and, at the same time, continue building the ways in which a community recognizes and projects itself.
The exhibition is curated by Laura González Flores and can be visited at the Amparo Museum in Puebla until August 24, 2026.
