Miró, Picasso, Tàpies and Barceló share a story in Valencia
The Bancaja Foundation brings together a selection of the collections of ABANCA and the institution itself in a journey through more than a century of painting, from historical avant-gardes to contemporary practices.
The Bancaja Foundation presents Commitment to Art. From Miró to Barceló , an exhibition that brings together the contemporary art collections of the Bancaja Foundation and ABANCA to offer a broad perspective on the evolution of painting in the 20th and 21st centuries. The proposal, curated by Fernando Castro Flórez, brings together a selection of works created between 1913 and 2023 that allows us to follow the aesthetic and conceptual transformations of more than a century of artistic creation.
The exhibition is part of the collaboration initiated between the two institutions, which had a first presentation at the Afundación headquarters, in A Coruña, in October 2025. Now it arrives in Valencia with a new selection of works adapted to the spaces of the Bancaja Foundation, reinforcing the dialogue between two collections that share the interest in preserving and disseminating contemporary artistic heritage.
The exhibition tour brings together 86 works, of which 48 come from the ABANCA Collection and 38 from the Bancaja Foundation's collections. In total, 59 artists are represented, key figures of the main pictorial movements that have defined national and international art over the last hundred years.
The exhibition begins with the historical avant-garde, represented by fundamental creators such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Wassily Kandinsky, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Paul Klee, Joaquín Torres García, Marc Chagall, Giorgio de Chirico, André Lhote or Jean Metzinger. This first area shows the formal and conceptual revolution that transformed European painting during the first half of the 20th century.
The discourse continues with the great names of Spanish informalism, among which Antonio Saura, Rafael Canogar, Manolo Millares and Antoni Tàpies stand out, as well as with artists linked to geometric abstraction, such as Eusebio Sempere and José María Yturralde, who explore new relationships between form, space and perception.
The last part of the tour reflects the plurality of contemporary painting through the abstractions of Sean Scully, José Manuel Broto, Antón Lamazares, José María Sicilia, Miguel Ángel Campano or Günther Förg, alongside the figurative and pop approaches of Manolo Valdés, Luis Gordillo, Darío Villalba, Equipo Crónica, Anzo, Juan Barjola, Juan Navarro Baldeweg or Miquel Barceló. Without following a linear reading of art history, the exhibition claims the coexistence of diverse languages and sensibilities.
The tour is completed with a set of works that establish a direct relationship with the landscape, nature and the urban environment, with pieces by Miquel Navarro, Cristina Iglesias, Urbano Lugrís and Julian Opie, expanding the reflection on the multiple directions that contemporary painting has adopted.
