Pere Portabella, cinema as a space of freedom
The Girona Film Museum commemorates the filmmaker's centenary with an exhibition that traces his career through archives, images and unpublished materials.
The Girona Film Museum dedicates a new exhibition to one of the fundamental figures of contemporary Catalan cinema. Pere Portabella: the critical gesture and the poetic resistance reviews the career of the filmmaker and producer on the occasion of his centenary, through a selection of documents, photographs, posters and audiovisual materials from the documentary collection of Pere Portabella and the production company Films 59, preserved in the Filmoteca de Catalunya.
The exhibition, installed in the lobby of the Cinema Museum, is part of Acció Portabella, an international program of activities promoted to commemorate the centenary of the filmmaker, born in Figueres in 1927. The exhibition offers a global look at a career marked by the will to experiment, political commitment and a way of understanding cinema as a space of freedom and reflection.
The tour brings together a wide variety of archival materials: script treatments, handwritten steps, correspondence, postcards, filming photographs, promotional documents and original posters signed by artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró and Joan Ponç. It also incorporates two historical cinematographic cameras from the collection of the Museu del Cinema and an audiovisual montage that synthesizes the main stages of Portabella's filmography.
One of the exhibition spaces is dedicated to the relationship between Pere Portabella and filmmaker Joaquim Jordà, coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of his death. This section recovers some of the projects shared by the two creators, initiatives that, despite their importance within the film industry, ultimately did not materialize.
Produced by the Museu del Cinema, the exhibition is curated by Jordi Dorca, coordinated by Jordi Pons and mounted by Rafel d'Arquer. The documentation and conservation work was carried out by Jordi Vidal, from Films 59, and Montse Puigdevall, from the Museu del Cinema, while the audiovisual assembly was carried out by Jordi Vidal.
The materials on display come mainly from the Pere Portabella Documentary Collection deposited at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, with audiovisuals lent by Films 59. The exhibition can be visited in the lobby of the Museu del Cinema until April 11, 2027, offering an approach to the legacy of a creator who has turned cinema into a tool of resistance, artistic research and critical thinking.
