Jordi Díaz Alamà and the renewal of contemporary realism take over the Benedormiens Castle
Castell d'Aro presents a double look at painting, drawing and sculpture through the artist's career and the pedagogical project of the Barcelona Academy of Art.
This summer, the Castell de Benedormiens in Castell d'Aro becomes a space for dialogue between artistic creation and the transmission of knowledge with an exhibition that brings together the pictorial career of Jordi Díaz Alamà and a selection of works by the faculty and students of the Barcelona Academy of Art, an institution that the artist founded more than a decade ago in Barcelona. The exhibition, which can be visited from August 1 to September 27, proposes an approach to a way of understanding art based on mastery of the craft, the figurative tradition and the desire to explore the expressive limits of representation.
The project proposes a journey and a dialogue of perspectives through a trajectory marked by constant research. Jordi Díaz Alamà (Granollers, 1986) has built a body of work where technique does not appear as a closed objective, but as a tool of freedom. In his work, academic rigor coexists with a contemporary perspective that questions the possibilities of realism at a time when figurative painting is undergoing a renewed critical review.
Trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, where he also worked as a teacher in the Drawing Department, Alamà expanded his training in international centers such as The Florence Academy of Art and in workshops of artists linked to the classical pictorial tradition. This combination of academic knowledge and direct experience with great masters has been fundamental in the configuration of his own language, characterized by extraordinary technical capacity and a deep reflection on light, matter and the human figure.
His painting is based on realism, but moves away from the simple imitation of the visible world. His compositions explore the symbolic dimension of images, the tension between the tangible and the suggested, and the capacity of painting to construct atmospheres that go beyond representation. In this sense, Alamà is part of a generation of artists who claim the value of the pictorial craft without renouncing a fully contemporary sensibility.
The exhibition at the Castell de Benedormiens broadens this perspective with a collective exhibition dedicated to the pedagogical project of the Barcelona Academy of Art. The works of the teaching staff and students allow us to observe how this school has become a space for the recovery and updating of traditional disciplines such as painting, drawing and sculpture. The coexistence of different generations of artists shows that technical learning is not incompatible with personal research, but can become the starting point for new forms of expression.
On the upper floor of the castle, visitors will also be able to discover a selection from the Castell d'Aro Municipal Art Collection, made up of pieces by artists who have exhibited in this facility for over forty years. This retrospective reinforces the municipality's vocation to preserve artistic memory and at the same time establish connections between the different creative generations that have passed through its spaces.
The proposal is part of the annual cycle of visual arts ART 2026, promoted by the Department of Culture of the City Council of Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro and S'Agaró, which is in its sixth edition of the annual program and which this year includes seven exhibitions of different disciplines and languages. A continuous commitment that turns the municipality into a territory of artistic discovery throughout the year.
Among the outstanding proposals is the large-format sculptural installation by Duván López in the Parc dels Estanys in Platja d'Aro, under the title Les pedres parlen , an outdoor intervention that can be visited until February of next year. The Espai Masia Bas also hosts De la planxa al paper , an exhibition dedicated to the graphic work of Josep Guinovart, with a selection of engravings, lithographs and etchings that show the experimental richness of one of the great names of Catalan art of the 20th century.
The program will be completed with the traditional Biennial of Local Artists, scheduled at the Castell de Benedormiens from October 3 to November 22, after having hosted exhibitions dedicated to Eleke Daemmrich, Jov'Art and Duván during the season. With this program, Castell d'Aro reaffirms a cultural line sustained for 44 years: understanding art as a meeting place between heritage, contemporary creation and citizen participation.
