Isaki Lacuesta films 'El fons de l'Estany', his most intimate project, in Banyoles
The new feature film, of autobiographical inspiration and produced by Sandra Hermida, Belén Atienza and JA Bayona, turns Banyoles into the setting for a story about memory, friendship and the transition from childhood to adolescence.
Banyoles once again occupies a central place in the creative universe of Isaki Lacuesta. The filmmaker, one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Catalan cinema, has begun filming El fons de l'Estany , a feature film with a marked autobiographical character that recovers the landscapes and memories of his adolescence to build a story of mystery, friendship and personal discovery.
The filming, which takes place in different locations in the center and north of the city, will last until August 14. Banyoles, where Lacuesta grew up, is not only the backdrop of the film, but also an emotional space that becomes one of the protagonists of the narrative.
Set in 1989, the film follows the story of Iván, a thirteen-year-old boy whose life is unexpectedly changed when his best friend, fifteen-year-old Jan, disappears without a trace. While the entire town joins in the search for him, only Iván discovers the truth: his friend has taken refuge around the pond and refuses to return home. During a few days spent on the fringes of the adult world, the two teenagers share an experience of freedom, complicity and growth that will forever mark their lives.
Inspired by a real episode experienced by the director himself during his adolescence, the film transforms that memory into a story full of tension and sensitivity. According to the producers, Lacuesta constructs "a mystery story as beautiful as it is disturbing", in which he unfolds a particularly personal look at memory, loss and the transition to maturity.
The production is led by Sandra Hermida, Belén Atienza and JA Bayona, who have highlighted the emotional dimension of the project and the director's return to the city where he grew up. For the producers, this film represents an opportunity for Lacuesta to revisit the scenes of his youth and transform them into cinematic material with the visual language that characterizes his filmography.
The cast combines established performers with new talents. Àlex Brendemühl, Alba Guilera and Quim Àvila head the adult cast, while young Aleix Sagrera and Lluc Miravete take on the leading roles of Iván and Jan, becoming the center of a story that explores the boundaries between reality and memory.
