Marta Mas Girones: photography as a refuge from the enigma of living
'Living or the Enigma of Reason' transforms family memory and emotional fragility into a story about intimacy, inheritance and the need to find a place in the world.
As part of Art Nou, the program dedicated to giving visibility to new generations of artists, Marta Mas Girones presents Viure o l'enigma de la raço , an exhibition that stems from an intimate investigation into family memory and the invisible wounds that pass from one generation to another. The exhibition, which can be visited from 1 to 31 July 2026, is based on the personal diaries of her grandmother, a woman marked by schizophrenia and depression, and by the persistent feeling of never having found her own space in the world, neither as a writer nor as a woman.
From this written legacy, the artist constructs a reflection on the links between identity, emotional inheritance and fragility. The works explore the fear of repeating a family history—the fear of ending up like the grandmother—but also a more universal concern: the fear of dying or, perhaps even deeper, the fear of not having lived enough.
Photography becomes a tool to observe those intimate spaces that allow us to resist discomfort. Marta Mas Girones' images do not seek grand settings or extraordinary moments, but rather delve into everyday life, into the small gestures and close presences that give meaning to existence. Scenes of the here and now that act as a counterpoint to loneliness and as an antidote to the feeling of uprootedness.
In this visual journey, community and loved ones appear as spaces of protection and reconnection with life. Simple gestures—a look, an encounter, a shared moment—acquire a restorative force and reveal how what is closest can become a form of resistance.
Born in Begues (Barcelona) in 1995, Marta Mas Girones is a photographer specializing in portraiture and trained in philosophy. Her artistic practice focuses on exploring the intimacy and authenticity of the people who pass in front of her camera. With Living or the enigma of reason , the artist turns a familiar experience into an open reflection on memory, vulnerability and the human need to find a place from which to exist.
