Vicente Matallana, a key figure in the preservation and dissemination of digital art, dies
The director of the NEWART Center in Reus, promoter of the BEEP Electronic Art Collection and founder of LaAgencia, leaves an essential legacy in contemporary technological art.
Vicente Matallana, director of the NEWART Center in Reus and one of the most relevant figures in digital art in Spain, died on Saturday, July 18, at the age of 58. Born in Madrid in 1967, Matallana had dedicated his professional career to the promotion, conservation and dissemination of electronic art, becoming an international reference in this field.
Since its opening, the NEWART Centre had Matallana as its director and main promoter of the project. The entity has expressed its deep regret for a death that it has described as "sad and unexpected" and has highlighted that his vision, knowledge and commitment were decisive in consolidating the centre as a reference space dedicated to artistic practices linked to new technologies.
At the same time, Matallana directed the BEEP Collection of Electronic Art, one of the most important collections specializing in contemporary technological art, and had founded LaAgencia, a platform from which he promoted projects for research, production and dissemination of digital art both on a national and international scale.
Throughout his career, he worked to give visibility to emerging artistic practices linked to technology, promoting the dialogue between art, science and innovation. His work was decisive in preserving a creative heritage often conditioned by the obsolescence of technological supports, while contributing to placing electronic art at the center of contemporary cultural debate.
The NEWART Centre also wanted to remember his firm commitment to culture and the defense of ethical and democratic values, qualities that, they say, marked both his professional career and his human dimension.
