The Brossa Foundation vindicates Pere Portabella on his centenary
Curated by Marcelo Expósito, the exhibition celebrates the centenary of the filmmaker and politician with a journey that explores his relationship with Joan Brossa and his role as an agent of artistic, cultural and political transformation.
Coinciding with the centenary of Pere Portabella, the Fundació Joan Brossa presents the Anti-Fascist Variety Exhibition , a proposal that can be visited from April 16 to October 11, 2026. The exhibition delves into the career of the filmmaker, producer and politician from its multiple facets, focusing on both his contribution to avant-garde cinema and his political commitment, without forgetting the deep artistic and intellectual complicity that he maintained with Joan Brossa.
Curated by Marcelo Expósito, the exhibition brings together a wide range of documents from the Portabella and Brossa archives, as well as materials from diverse sources that allow us to reconstruct an extensive network of cultural, artistic and political relationships. Far from being a conventional retrospective, the proposal is conceived as a large constellation of documents, memories and experiences that dialogue with each other.
The exhibition project presents Portabella as a key figure in contemporary Catalan culture, capable of establishing bridges between artists, intellectuals, activists and social movements. This mediator dimension is the common thread of the exhibition, which claims his capacity to generate meeting spaces and promote transformations in both the aesthetic and political spheres.
Through documentary materials, photographs, works of art, audiovisual pieces and testimonies, the tour highlights how his work has been inseparable from the democratic struggles, critical culture and experimental practices that have marked the country's recent history.
The exhibition incorporates works by Paula Artés, Pau Barceló, Joan Brossa, Violeta LaBurra, Francesc Català-Roca, Colita, Frau Diamanda, Joaquim Gomis, Núria Güell, Grup de Treball, Abel Jaramillo, Daniela Ortiz, Josep M. Mestres Quadreny, Mabel Palacín, Pere Portabella, Humberto Rivas and Carles Santos, among others, forming a collective story that demonstrates the validity of their legacy and the influence that they continue to exert on several generations of creators.
