Valérie Belin at the Picasso Museum Barcelona: between the image and its illusion

An exhibition that questions photographic reality and the construction of contemporary identity.

The Museu Picasso Barcelona presents, from April 17 to September 6, 2026, a temporary exhibition dedicated to the French photographer Valérie Belin, one of the most prominent voices of her generation in the field of contemporary photography.

The exhibition brings together nearly thirty works that invite the visitor to question the very nature of the photographic image. In Belin's work, nothing is completely stable or absolutely real: each image becomes a space open to multiple interpretations, where the boundary between reality and representation deliberately fades.

A journey through identity, the body and the simulacrum

Initially trained in art and philosophy, Valérie Belin discovered photography in the mid-1980s. Since then, she has developed a body of work focused on the construction of identity and the mechanisms of visual representation. Her works explore how individuals become images, and how these images can replace or transform reality.

From the 1990s onwards, the artist focused particularly on the human figure. Series such as Bodybuilders , Transsexuels , Femmes noires or Mannequins present bodies and faces that seem suspended between the organic and the artificial. Later, with the arrival of colour from 2006 onwards, his work evolved towards a visual language that some critics have described as a form of “photographic magic realism”.

Between formal precision and visual destabilization

The exhibition includes notable pieces such as Venecia II (1997), where mirrors blur and fragment the image; Black-Eyed Susan (2010), where female faces merge with floral elements; or Cover Girls (2026), portraits of models intervened with overlays that question the idea of beauty and identity. Also presented is the Still Life series, with works such as Still Life With Mirror (2014), where still life becomes a space for visual reflection.

Belin's compositions are characterized by frontality, repetition, and an almost sculptural formal precision. The neutral background—often white or black—accentuates the enigmatic presence of the subjects, who seem to be situated in an intermediate space between the real and the constructed.

The image as construction and simulation

His work also addresses popular culture, mimicry and contemporary visual codes. Models, mannequins, doubles or transgender figures share the same symbolic territory: the desire to become an image, to achieve a projected and constructed identity.

Through makeup, overlays and digital retouching, Belin not only documents, but transforms. His photographs operate as devices of both revelation and concealment, placing the viewer before an ambiguous reality, between truth and fiction.

A dialogue with contemporary art

This exhibition is part of the museum's program, which in recent years has promoted projects that connect Picasso's legacy with contemporary creation. In this context, Belin's work dialogues with essential questions of contemporary art: identity, representation and the construction of the image in the visual age.

The result is a proposal that invites us to look at photography itself with suspicion, and at the same time to recognize its power as a language capable of reinventing reality.
