June 2026 marks the beginning of the territorial activities of the Year of Aurèlia Muñoz, a commemoration promoted by MACBA with the collaboration of a wide network of cultural institutions. The program celebrates the centenary of the birth of one of the key figures of Catalan contemporary art, vindicating her visionary contribution in the field of textile art and her relationship with nature, space and material processes.
The centenary is curated by Sílvia Ventosa Muñoz, head of the Aurèlia Muñoz Archive, with scientific advice from einaidea (Fundació Eina, Barcelona) under the direction of Manuel Cirauqui. Among the highlights of the program, the exhibition Aurèlia Muñoz. Ens stands out , which will open next November at the MACBA and aims to offer an overview of the artist's career.
Granollers: space, knot and network in dialogue with the work
The Granollers Museum will host the conversation Aurèlia Muñoz on June 11. Ens, materials and elements of nature , as part of the Opera Aperta festival. The meeting will bring together Sílvia Ventosa Muñoz and Manuel Cirauqui to reflect on the ontology present in the artist's work, based on the piece Capa amb capelina .
The festival proposes a reading of Aurèlia Muñoz's textile sculpture through three key notions—space, knot and network—understood not as abstract concepts, but as forms of relationship with the world and with matter.
Capellades: the matter of paper as a starting point
Two days later, on June 13, the Molí Paperer Museum in Capellades offers the workshop Approaching the Paper Work of Aurèlia Muñoz . The activity, led by Victòria Rabal, director of the museum, and Sílvia Ventosa Muñoz, is based on a selection of works by the artist and materials in process from the center's collection.
The workshop focuses on the artisanal techniques of paper production, an essential medium in Muñoz's artistic research, and reinforces the connection between artistic creation and material knowledge.
The 'Star Birds' fly again at MACBA
In parallel, since April 13, the atrium of the Meier building of the MACBA presents three reconstructions of the series Ocells-estels , one of the artist's most emblematic works. Conceived in the early eighties, these pieces were exhibited in spaces of great international projection such as the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid, the Drassanes Reials in Barcelona or the International Tapestry Biennale in Lausanne.
The current installation recovers Muñoz's original intention: works suspended at great height, in dialogue with natural light and architecture. The project has been made possible thanks to the collaboration between MACBA, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Arxiu Aurèlia Muñoz and Casa Batlló Contemporary, and also establishes a symbolic bridge with the legacy of Antoni Gaudí in the year of the centenary of his death.
With these first activities, the Aurèlia Muñoz Year begins a journey that aims to activate the territory and reopen the contemporary reading of a work that continues to question the way we inhabit space, matter and nature.
