Miró's mural in El Prat is now a Site of Cultural Interest

The Council of Ministers has declared the large ceramic mural created by Joan Miró for the facade of Terminal 2 of El Prat Airport in Barcelona to be an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), in the category of movable property. The announcement was made by the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, after the Executive meeting held this Tuesday.

The measure represents the highest level of protection provided for by the Historical Heritage Law and puts an end to a long-standing demand promoted by Catalan civil society. The process accelerated after the Official College of Architects of Catalonia expressed its rejection of the possibility of moving the work to Terminal 1 of the airport. Following that controversy, the Ministry of Culture initiated proceedings last November to guarantee the permanence and conservation of the mural in its original location.

The piece was conceived in 1968 as a commission from Barcelona City Council to modernize the image of the then new air terminal and offer a great artistic welcome to all people arriving in the city by air. The work was created by Miró in collaboration with the ceramist Josep Llorens Artigas, one of his most frequent collaborators.

The mural stands out not only for its symbolic and artistic value, but also for its monumental dimensions: it occupies an area of 500 square meters and is made up of 4,865 glazed tiles placed horizontally. Its structure weighs 35 tons, making it one of the most imposing ceramic works of contemporary Spanish artistic heritage.
