The museums of Catalonia are celebrating International Museum Day (IMD), which takes place every May 18, with a program that exceeds 200 activities spread throughout the territory. Between May 16 and 18, the museum facilities offer open days, guided and theatrical tours, family workshops, concerts and immersive proposals for all audiences.
Promoted by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 1977, this year's commemoration is celebrated under the motto "Museums uniting a divided world", which emphasizes the capacity of museums as spaces for dialogue, inclusion and social cohesion. In Catalonia, the Night of Museums concentrates a prominent part of the activity this weekend, given that May 18 falls on a Monday.
According to recent data from the Department of Culture, the 239 museums and collections analyzed have received nearly 20 million visitors over the last year, a figure that reinforces the weight of the cultural sector in the country.
This year's program is also marked by new developments and reopenings, such as the renovation of various facilities, new museographic projects and innovative initiatives linked to art, technology and sustainability. At the same time, notable anniversaries have been celebrated such as the 50th anniversary of the Miró Foundation, the 30th anniversary of the MACBA or the 125th anniversary of the Tortosa Museum.
Throughout the territory, museums have prepared specific activities: artistic proposals at the Museu de l'Empordà and at MORERA in Lleida, concerts in the Alt Pirineu, exhibitions in Aran, cultural itineraries in Tarragona, immersive experiences in El Masnou or theatrical visits to the Penedès. Family workshops, performances and night activities in multiple facilities also stand out.
