Velvet Revolution where Mónica Jover's 'stitched paint' transforms SELTZ
An approach to expanded painting between color, landscape and thread. Jover understands painting as an expanded field, where color, matter and space intertwine to generate a sensorial and poetic language that transcends the traditional limits of the painting.
SELTZ Barcelona presents Velvet Revolution , an exhibition by Mónica Jover Calvo that can be visited until May 21. The project brings together a recent selection of works that consolidate her research around the so-called “sewn painting”, an evolution of expanded painting where the textile language takes on a central role.
In his practice, Jover starts from painting and color as a structural element, but his work has progressively shifted towards a more material and spatial dimension. The incorporation of thread does not act only as a formal resource, but as an element that expands the pictorial gesture beyond the canvas, generating complex relationships between image, surface and volume.
His works construct landscapes that do not seek literal representation, but rather evocation. Between abstraction and natural suggestion, the compositions propose a visual experience that connects with memory and emotion, blurring the boundaries between painting and object, two-dimensionality and relief.
For the exhibition, the artist has also developed a site-specific intervention designed specifically for the gallery space. In this piece, the thread definitively abandons the pictorial surface to unfold as a line of energy that crosses the architecture, establishing connections between the works and the exhibition environment.
This framework turns the room into an active space, where architecture ceases to be a simple container and directly participates in the construction of the work. The visitor is immersed in a journey that invites an attentive and leisurely look, where perception becomes an essential part of the experience.
