With the passing of Antoni Marí at the age of 81, Catalan and Balearic culture loses one of its most lucid and persistent voices. Born in Ibiza in 1944, Marí developed an intellectual career that moved naturally between poetry, essays and narrative, in parallel with an outstanding academic career.

Over the decades, he established himself as a central figure in contemporary literary thought, with a work marked by reflection on subjectivity, identity and the role of the individual in modernity. His rigorous and demanding style made him a reference point for both his creative output and his theoretical contribution.

This recognition resulted in numerous awards, including the Serra d'Or Critics' Award, the Ciutat de Barcelona Award and the Prudenci Bertrana Award for Novel. However, beyond the awards, his influence has been projected on several generations who have found in his work a tool for thinking about the present.

Until recent years, Marí maintained a constant activity. In 2019, he published, with Francesc Parcerisas, Shadow and Light. Variations on a Romantic Theme , a book that articulates a dialogue about tradition and its continuity in contemporaneity, one of the recurring concerns of his thought.

A graduate in Philosophy and Letters, he specialized in art theory and taught at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Pompeu Fabra University. This pedagogical work was key in the training of new generations within the humanities field.

In the literary field, his debut came with El preludi (1979), although in the beginning he devoted special attention to the essay. This double dedication —between creation and reflection— defines a work that resists generic boundaries and that advocates a broad conception of culture.
