Ingrid Hernández, twenty years of art from the border
The Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT), in collaboration with Relaciones Inesperadas, presents Ingrid Hernández: 20 Years of Art. Under Construction , on view until March 8. This exhibition reviews two decades of work by one of the key figures in contemporary art on Mexico's northern border. The show not only traces a retrospective journey but also offers a critical analysis of the social and urban processes that have shaped her artistic practice.
Curated by Daniela Lieja Quintanar and Rosela del Bosque, the exhibition brings together thirteen key projects, two previously unseen works, and a documentary archive linked to the platform founded by the artist herself. More than 150 pieces—including photography, prints, installations, and archival materials—compose a journey that underscores the processual dimension of her work, as well as the methodological and conceptual intersections that underpin it.
Founded in 2012 by visual artists Abraham Ávila and Ingrid Hernández, Relaciones Inesperadas has established itself as a space for reflection on contemporary artistic practices from a multidisciplinary perspective. Through public programs, residencies, exhibitions, and educational initiatives, the platform fosters research, exchange, and collaboration among creators, researchers, and diverse communities, with a focus on marginalized contexts.
One of its central focuses is the construction of historical memory surrounding women artists who work outside the hegemonic center of Mexico. In parallel, the project seeks to equip new generations with critical tools to understand the evolution of border cities and the importance of generating their own narratives in the face of dominant ones.
In line with this approach, the exhibition highlights self-construction as a structural factor in the urban configuration of the border region, closely linked to migration processes. It also brings to the forefront issues such as access to housing in the context of industrial growth and the expansion of the maquiladora industry, addressing the social and economic tensions that have shaped the territory.
