Conceived as an open platform for cooperation, BesArt articulates murals, workshops and events under the same vision: to transform the Besòs River Park into a living space for meeting, collective growth and free expression. The project is firmly committed to an inclusive, sustainable and transformative cultural model, synthesized in a motto that expresses its essence: Yes, Art is Necessary .
BesArt, the largest urban art museum in the world, is a unique cultural project that has the institutional support of the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council, the Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona and an extensive network of collaborators from the cultural, educational and social fields.
Today, the Besòs River Park is a natural environment rich in biodiversity, where waterfowl, amphibians, fish and a flora typical of the Mediterranean ecosystem coexist. This biological diversity, the result of an exemplary environmental regeneration process, is not only an ecological value, but also a central axis of the cultural discourse of BesArt.

Through art, the project celebrates and makes visible this biodiversity, establishing a constant dialogue between nature and artistic creation. Each mural, sculpture or ephemeral intervention contributes to shaping an authentic creative ecosystem, where the natural environment and contemporary expression respect and enrich each other.
In this context, art becomes a universal language to promote sustainability, respect for the territory and ecological awareness. Each work is also a tribute to the life that beats on the banks of the river.

BesArt The River Museum was born as an act of radical transformation: from what was the most polluted river in Europe to one of the most ambitious cultural projects of the 21st century. Along more than 18 kilometers that cross Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Barcelona, the Besòs River Park becomes the largest open-air urban art museum in the world, a space where culture, nature and community converge.

The Besòs as a mirror of the social, environmental and cultural transformation of Catalonia
The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, this morning, January 16, highlighted the river and its surroundings as a "thermometer" of the evolution of Catalonia in various dimensions: social, environmental and cultural. This view, in the midst of the modernization and regeneration process of the territory, offers a symbolic and at the same time concrete reading of the role played by the Besòs space in the collective narrative of the country.
For Illa, the Besòs area represents “an area in constant transformation in a world that is changing rapidly”, a context where culture becomes a transformative force that inspires hope despite an uncertain and risky international environment. With these words, he celebrated the consolidation of an innovative artistic project like BesArt, which allows citizens free access to art and culture without barriers, thus strengthening social cohesion and community identity.

The visit, which was attended by several local authorities and representatives from the cultural and business worlds, also gave rise to reflection on the trajectory of the river and the cities that surround it. “It is an area in constant transformation and a space that symbolizes the resilience and capacity for regeneration of our society,” said Illa, underlining the importance of projects that combine the environment, culture and community life.
The event highlighted not only the landscape and ecological impact of the recovery of the Besòs, but also its symbolic dimension: a river that, from being one of the most degraded in Europe, is now a stage for cultural and social innovation. This approach, according to Illa, makes visible “a culture that expands beyond traditional walls” and merges with the daily life of the neighborhoods and cities that make up the metropolitan environment.
