On January 22nd, the Figueres City Council, together with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, will publicly present in the Sala María Zambrano of the Círculo de Bellas Artes the loan agreement for a screen decorated by Salvador Dalí during the 1920s, which is part of the Reina Sofía collection. This piece will be temporarily exhibited at the Casa Natal Salvador Dalí, which will allow the public to see a little-known work of great artistic and historical value.
This is an exceptional work, of great importance within the whole of Dalí's production and his creative universe, both for its unusual format and for the oriental-inspired motifs that characterize it, scarce in the artist's early stage. The screen highlights Dalí's interest, already in his youth, in distant imaginaries and non-Western aesthetics, and anticipates some of the elements that would mark his later artistic career.
This piece also stands out among the unique acquisitions made by the Reina Sofía in 2025. Dalí created it when he was just nineteen years old, commissioned by his sister, and incorporates clear Asian reminiscences, both in the composition and in the decorative treatment. This visual language is also linked to the universe of the Ballets Russes and establishes a dialogue with the Portrait of Sonia Klamery by Anglada Camarasa, a work preserved in the MNCARS collection. The screen was integrated into the museum's collection after an auction bid, becoming a fundamental acquisition for delving deeper into Salvador Dalí's artistic beginnings and the influences that marked his training.
