TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes inaugurates the XVIII International Photography Biennial Fotonoviembre

The TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes museum inaugurated the eighteenth edition of the Fotonoviembre International Photography Biennial last Thursday, November 13th. This festival has established itself over the years as a leading event for promoting photography, not only in the Canary Islands but also internationally. The biennial has become a space for dialogue and reflection on the diverse possibilities of contemporary photography, offering visitors an experience that combines aesthetic sensibility with a critical understanding of the image.

  • Sonsoles Company. Ciudad Jardín, 2025.

Under the title The Vertigo of Images , the exhibition, curated by Marta Dahó Masdemont, can be visited until February 22 and brings together the work of an extensive selection of artists that includes both historical references and contemporary creators. Among them are names such as Teresa Arozena, Ismaïl Bahri, Eline Benjaminsen and Dayna Casey, Bleda y Rosa, Patricia Dauder, Erik Estany Tigerström, Max de Esteban, Carla Filipe, Lee Friedlander, Marina Gadonneix, Paul Graham, Guido Guidi, Linarejos Moreno, Man Ray, Joana Moll, Pilar Monsell, Julia Montilla, Silvia Navarro Martín, Mabel Palacín, Joel Peláez Amador, Pérez y Requena, Aleix Plademunt, Lúcia Prancha, Xavier Ribas, Lotty Rosenfeld, Laia Serra Cribillers, Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel, Damián Ucieda, Oriol Vilapuig, Werker Collective and Tobias Zielony.

The biennial invites the public to explore a space that examines photography's capacity to generate emotions, challenge perceptions, and reflect the complexity of the contemporary world. According to curator Marta Dahó Masdemont, the exhibition also aims to reclaim the critical potential of images. “Photographs not only capture moments, but they also have the capacity to question the norm, raise questions, and disrupt what is taken for granted,” explained Dahó, emphasizing that the project aligns with the ideas of philosopher Andrea Soto Calderón, who highlights the performative and productive power of images, capable of opening new possibilities in both thought and imagination.

  • Roberto Casañas Afonso, Jesús Yagüe Suárez, Jesús Acosta Casañas. From the Roferas series. First prize in the series category.

In this context, the biennial pays special attention to the processes that shape images, understood as tools for generating diversity in the face of prevailing narratives. “This approach is essential to counteract the imposition of visions that tend to move in a single direction,” the curator concluded, emphasizing the importance of photography as a medium that not only reflects reality but can also transform it and broaden our understanding of it.

With this new edition, Fotonoviembre reaffirms its commitment to the critical exploration of the image and consolidates TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes as a benchmark space for international photography, offering visitors a journey that combines aesthetic sensitivity, social reflection and the discovery of new perspectives on the world around us.
