The subversion of painting with the dialogue Gimeno and Súnico in Artur Ramon Art
bonart barcelona - 17/11/25

Artur Ramon Art presents Francesc Gimeno / Jaime Súnico. The Subversion of Painting , an exhibition that puts into dialogue two artistic voices from different generations, but with a common denominator: the need to capture the truth from the wild, visceral and deeply human terrain of painting. The works of Gimeno and Súnico invite the viewer to enter a universe where technique becomes an instrument of subversion and emotion, a creative engine. This exhibition reveals how painting can transcend time and trends, exploring the intensity of human experience with uncompromising authenticity.

An exhibition that opens on November 18 and can be seen until January 16, 2026, where an outstanding selection of works by Francesc Gimeno and Jaime Súnico is presented, establishing a direct dialogue between their gestures, textures and silences that inhabit their canvases. Putting Gimeno's universe in contact with that of Súnico allows us to trace a common thread that connects two stages of Catalan pictorial history, united by the same creative impulse: recovering painting as a space of truth and profound experience.

  • Self-portrait, Francesc Gimeno, 1915.

Francesc Gimeno (Tortosa, 1858 – Barcelona, 1927) is one of the most unique painters in the history of Catalan painting. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and influenced by masters such as Velázquez, Gimeno developed a very personal realist style, characterized by powerful brushstrokes, expressive textures and an intense look at reality. He lived a marginal career, with economic difficulties and late recognition, leaving a legacy of self-portraits, landscapes and scenes of customs that capture the strength of his vision of the world.

Putting Gimeno's universe in contact with that of Jaime Súnico allows us to trace a thread that connects two stages of Catalan painting through the same impulse: to recover painting as a space of truth and profound experience. This exhibition reveals the capacity of art to transcend time, inviting the viewer to experience the intensity of a painting that is, at the same time, subversive and intimate.

  • Untitled, Jaime Súnico, 2007.

Súnico is part of the same genealogy of truth and intensity as Francesc Gimeno. His work, built with telluric layers of color worked with a spatula, explores the physical and emotional limits of painting. His portraits seem to vibrate with a life of their own; the figures emerge from the pigment as presences that impose their silent force. The spaces he creates are fields of tension where light and matter fight to impose themselves, as if each canvas were a miniature universe. Súnico, like Gimeno, often confronts himself in the self-portrait: the artist alone in front of the world, making the painting a cry, a vibration that resonates beyond the canvas.

In the words of Artur Ramon, curator of the exhibition: “Francesc Gimeno and Jaime Súnico, face to face, express and represent the evolution of the same idea: the desire to grasp the truth from living, violent and harsh, innocent and honest painting. This exhibition claims the subversion of painting as a radical and pure gesture in modern times.”
