Art takes over the city: Madrid Gallery Weekend begins

Madrid will host the 16th edition of Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend, from September 11 to 14, 2025. Organized by the Arte Madrid association, the event will mark the official start of the exhibition season and will bring together 57 galleries spread across the city, from the historic spaces of Centro and Las Salesas to the emerging neighborhoods of Lavapiés and Carabanchel.

For four days, the galleries will open their doors with simultaneous openings, guided tours, and an extensive program of free activities aimed at bringing contemporary art closer not only to collectors and industry professionals, but also to the general public. The program includes solo and group exhibitions in the gallery, as well as outdoor activities such as the installation of sculptures in the garden of the Lázaro Galdiano Museum.

Madrid Gallery Weekend has established itself as one of the most anticipated cultural events of September. Last year's edition attracted more than 24,000 people during its main event and surpassed 60,000 visitors throughout the month, confirming the vitality of the capital's art scene.

More than just a season opening, the event is presented as a meeting place for artists, gallery owners, institutions, and citizens. Madrid is transformed into an urban tour of contemporary art, where established proposals and new voices intertwine, thus reinforcing the city's role as a cultural benchmark in Europe.

This edition will feature 57 participating galleries, along with other collaborating spaces that will host special activities. The program will include simultaneous openings, guided and commented tours, artist encounters, and the renowned ARCO Gallery Walks, designed to bring contemporary art closer and more accessible. Additionally, Apertura KIDS is being introduced, a series of guided tours designed for children between the ages of 8 and 14, inviting them to discover art from a younger perspective.

In addition to the usual galleries, this year new spaces join the association, such as the Gerhardt Braun Gallery, Opera Gallery, and the Portuguese Pedro Cera, thus expanding the diversity of offerings. In addition to the exhibitions in the gallery, there is a program of activities in the spaces themselves, designed to showcase contemporary art and bring it more directly to the general public.

Three must-see exhibitions

Elvira González Gallery

The exhibition "Fernando Mignoni. Madrid 1929–2011" brings together a total of 35 works created between 1969 and 1991, offering a journey through different stages of the artist's work. The collection allows us to appreciate his beginnings as a young painter, focused on the exploration of the human figure, through his evolution toward more structured compositions, in which nature and landscape gained prominence and gradually displaced the figure.

Cayón

Coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of its inauguration, the Cayón Gallery presents Joan Miró / Presence of Black, the second exhibition dedicated to the artist (Barcelona, 1893 – Palma de Mallorca, 1983) at its headquarters at Blanca de Navarra, 9, Madrid. The project offers a unique approach to Miró's work through what he considered, without a doubt, the most sublime, pure, and rich color: black. This tone acquires an increasingly forceful and radical presence in his output, especially after his first trip to Japan in 1966, and permeates every stage of his creative career.

José de la Mano

Aurèlia Muñoz. Paper Sculpture reflects the gallery's distinctive approach, close to historical vindication, by presenting a distinguished selection of works on paper by the Catalan artist, created since the 1980s. Her output is characterized by constant and innovative visual exploration, masterfully exploring the effects of matter, texture, and color.
