In the heart of the heart: cinema as living matter

An installation that transforms cinema into a living process, subject to the action of time and the environment of the Casal Solleric Cistern.

Starting this evening, Casal Solleric will host a proposal that turns the conventional way of showing moving images on its head. It is an installation curated by Sergi Álvarez Riosalido that revolves around a film by Jorge Suárez Quiñones Rivas . The project, entitled En el corazón del corazón, does not limit itself to projecting the film, but rather turns it into an exposed piece, subjected to the environment and time, which erode and transform it as if it were an organic surface.

The film, recorded in Death Valley (California) in 2019, directly dialogues with the conditions of the Solleric Cistern, a space marked by humidity, the presence of microorganisms and an architecture that breathes. The exhibition flees from the screen as a limit and lets time and place physically modify the filmic support. It is not just about seeing images, but about understanding how they degrade, transform and, paradoxically, are maintained.

The installation connects this physical degradation with processes of cultural and linguistic loss. A 1972 sound recording, in which Mamie Boland speaks in Tümpisa—a nearly extinct language—and recalls life in Death Valley before that name became established, serves as a common thread for an exploration that does not aim to offer clear conclusions, but rather to open up questions.

This is not the first time that Suárez Quiñones Rivas has worked with the fragility of the support and the persistence of the gesture. He had already done so in Pintura de roca, where the wear came from the mechanical movement of a continuous projection. Now, however, the pressure comes from outside, from the environment, the humidity, another kind of insistence.
