Anna Irina Russell: a contagion

At Bombon Projects, sculptures that breathe and question how we relate.

Anna Irina Russell: a contagion
bonart barcelona - 05/06/25

Anna Irina Russell (Barcelona, 1993) presents her new exhibition Un contagion at Bombon Projects. The artist has dedicated the last few years to playing —literally— with communication, but from places that escape the usual and hegemonic codes. Russell uses sculpture and installation to turn these formats into tools of transmission. Her pieces, often soft, inflatable and almost organic, challenge us from their unstable presence. They are forms that breathe, that contract and expand, opening a space to rethink the body and its possibilities. “The bodies born from Anna Irina Russell's body are bodies that beat, that breathe, that swell to communicate with us”, writes Blanca Arias in the book Tomar aire, published by Brillo.

The exhibition can be visited from today, June 5, until July 26, and is part of a line of work that Russell has developed in spaces such as Tabakalera in Donosti (birika keinta elastikoa, 2025), the Fundació Joan Miró (Sala d'espera, 2024), the CCCB (Feminismes!, 2019) or La Panera in Lleida (Només si fa olor de terra, 2024), among others. The works in Un contagion extend through the space, not only physically, but also from a relational aspect. There is an evident desire to question established communicative structures and, at the same time, to imagine new ones. A certain fragility is perceived, but also a desire for connection, as Arias points out: “Breathing together implies being open to contagion”.
