Five years weaving the future in Girona Est
The Girona Est Foundation celebrates the expansion of a project that promotes equal opportunities, education and cohesion between neighborhoods.
The Girona Est Foundation began its journey in May 2020 with 35 children and two activities—football and music. Five years later, it mobilizes around 350 and has the support of around sixty companies. On May 15, more than two hundred people gathered at the Casa de les Arts to review this trajectory and share future goals ; the meeting also served to explicitly recognize all the people and entities that have collaborated, which consolidates Girona Est as a point of reference in social and community dynamism.
During the celebration, actor Fel Faixedas hosted the event, which included musical performances by Genís Ventura , Carles Martos , Juan Antonio Heredia and the Escola de Música a l'Est , as well as a round table with representatives of the neighborhood. Among the audience were the Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition and Government spokesperson, Sílvia Paneque ; the Government's subdelegate in Girona, Pere Parramon ; the mayor, Lluc Salellas , and councilors Amy Sabaly , Gemma Martínez , Àdam Bertran and Núria Riquelme .
The president of the foundation, Jaume Sanabras , highlighted the results obtained: reduction in school absenteeism, more cultural and sports offer and growing involvement of the neighborhood and entities. He stressed that the priority is to maintain the commitment because, in his words, “social projects are not abandoned”. The Casa de les Arts, defined as the materialization of culture as a tool and space for transformation, reflection and construction, wants to consolidate itself as a reference facility in the eastern sector of Girona. The next steps are to expand the educational and sports programs and ensure that the participation of young people continues to increase, always with the support of the network that has made it possible to get here.
Inaugurated in October 2023 and donated by the Poch family, the Casa de les Arts acts as the headquarters of the foundation. The building, built in the 1970s and adapted with multipurpose rooms, rooms for artistic residencies and a garden for outdoor activities, is part of the La Ciutat Policromada project, which combines art, urban planning and architecture to strengthen the physical and social environment of Girona Est. Both the concept of the Casa de les Arts and the La Ciutat Policromada project were promoted by bonart and have the direct involvement of Ricard Planas, who is part of the foundation's board of trustees.
As happened with the Escola de Vila-roja in June 2024, the facade of the Casa de les Arts has been reinterpreted by the artist Aleix Font. Through layers and symbolism, Font connects past and present, nature and cement, while exploring concepts such as balance, chaos or the periphery. The intervention takes advantage of the architectural details of the house and the idea of a swarm to transfer the foundation's networking to the wall.
