In the reign of Jaume Faixó: return to Girona after twenty-four years

With the title Al regne de Faixó, the Valvi Foundation opens its doors to an exhibition that marks the long-awaited return of a fundamental artist of Catalan abstraction. Twenty-four years after his last appearance in the city, Girona once again welcomes the pictorial universe of Jaume Faixó (1952–1998). The exhibition opens today , Tuesday 6 May at 7 pm , with the presentation by Jaume Fàbrega , and will run until 21 June .

The exhibition is a necessary retrospective look at a singular career that, despite having been recognized during his lifetime, has often remained on the margins of the institutional narrative. In this sense, the collaboration with the gallerist Richard Vanderaa —involved in the recovery of forgotten authors— is fully aligned with the mission of the Valvi Foundation to rescue essential figures for understanding our contemporary visual culture.

The exhibition pays special attention to the production of the eighties, a period in which Faixó deployed a refined language, based on an austere geometry, constructed with black and white that find themselves in a silent and profound tension. Apart from this period, the exhibition also incorporates works from other creative moments, revealing his experimental constancy and his fidelity to a voice of his own, unbound by trends or conventions.

Faixó was a methodical artist, deliberately slow. His pictorial process was close to the sculptural gesture, he often covered the paper with layers of black and, with manual tools, “extracted” the light, generating forms that seem to emerge from the darkness or disappear into it. This way of doing things allowed him to create dense and enigmatic atmospheres, charged with a contained spirituality. As Alfonso de la Torre , author of the text of the catalogue and one of the most recognized voices in the study of abstract art in the State, highlights, his work is “a praise of slowness” and an inquiry into the invisible.

Those who met him, such as the poet Josep M. Creus Dalgà , remember him as passionate about drawing, in love with materials and very much linked to the moment of cultural transformation that Girona experienced during the Transition. He was part of the Artists' Assembly and remained faithful to a silent radicalism that, perhaps for this reason, was misunderstood in his time. Despite this, his work received international recognition: the Joan Miró Prize in 1981 awarded him an outstanding mention, and today it is part of the Fundació Juan March's collections.

In the Kingdom of Faixó is, therefore, an act of symbolic and poetic restitution, a proposal that invites us to discover—or rediscover—a creator who made painting a way of thinking and feeling the world.
