Fernando Cuevas Ulitzsch delves into the fourth episode of the Bonart Internacional podcast, recorded during ARTBO, Bogotá's international art fair held last September. In this episode, he speaks with Santiago Vélez Salamanca (Medellín, 1972), a visual artist whose practice is characterized by experimentation and constant research into the technical and conceptual possibilities of photography.
Water occupies a central place in his work, both as a thematic resource and as an element of reflection. His search for the fleeting moment and the continuous reformulation of photographic procedures, through the manipulation of images and their supports, open up new metaphors and shift photography towards other contexts and meanings.
Vélez's research stems from ecological, social, and political concerns related to the environment, with water as a determining element. Through installations and multidisciplinary approaches, the artist explores the relationships between the environment, human beings, and their communities, establishing links, intersections, and tensions between global realities that manifest themselves in specific territories and social contexts.
