Travessia, between art, memory and community
The Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis will host, from October 9 to December 13, Travessia , an exhibition that is born from the work developed throughout 2026 between the museum institution and different services linked to health and psychosocial rehabilitation in Porto. The proposal brings together the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis (MNSR), the Unidade Local de Saúde de Santo António (ULSSA), through the Serviço de Reabilitação Psicossocial do Hospital de Magalhães Lemos, and the Unidade Local de Saúde de São João (ULSSJ), through the Unidade de Ação para o Desenvolvimento e Integração (UADI).
The inclusion of ULSSJ is one of the main new features of this year's program, expanding its reach to new audiences while reinforcing a line of work based on the relationship between artistic creation, health, and community. The museum thus becomes a space for exchange where artistic practice can function as a tool for expression, communication, and collective construction.
Travessia brings together artists' books created both individually and collectively. Each of these books is conceived as an open territory where personal experiences find different forms of representation. Words, drawings, collages, paintings, objects, and diverse materials coexist on pages that also leave room for silence, fragments, and that which cannot always be expressed through a conventional narrative.
The exhibition offers a journey through different personal and collective universes. Each book contains a unique perspective and, at the same time, forms part of a shared experience in which the creative process is as important as the final result.
The very concept of Travessia alludes to this journey: a passage through experiences, memories, emotions, and ways of imagining the world. The artist's book becomes the vehicle for this displacement and a place where different voices can meet, build memory, and transform individual experiences into a visible and shared expression.
