Aurèlia Muñoz in front of the Tapestry of Creation
Girona recovers one of the artist's sources of inspiration in a colloquium on Romanesque and medieval fabrics, as part of the commemoration of the centenary of his birth.
The Tapestry of Creation constitutes one of the fundamental references for understanding the textile universe of Aurèlia Muñoz. Her fascination with Catalan Romanesque and the shapes, textures and structures of medieval fabrics left a significant mark on her embroidery production and on her way of understanding textiles as a territory of artistic experimentation.
On the occasion of the centenary of the artist's birth (1926-2011), Girona is hosting the colloquium Davant el Tapís de la Creació , a meeting that proposes to delve deeper into this relationship between medieval heritage and contemporary creation. The session will bring together three complementary perspectives that will allow us to get closer to both Muñoz's sources of inspiration and the historical and material context that nourished them.
Joana Badia will discuss the Catalan Romanesque imagery present in the artist's work, while Sílvia Saladrigas will introduce the study of medieval Catalan textiles. Sílvia Ventosa Muñoz will complete the dialogue by specifically addressing Aurèlia Muñoz's interest in the Tapestry of Creation and the way in which this piece formed part of her artistic imagery.
The meeting is part of a commemoration that has mobilized several Catalan cultural institutions around a unique artist of the 20th century. Girona now takes over from the Granollers Museum, the Capellades Paper Mill Museum and the Terrassa Textile Museum, which have contributed to recovering different aspects of Muñoz's career and production.
This institutional itinerary will culminate at MACBA with the major exhibition dedicated to the artist, which will open on November 5. The exhibition will allow us to broaden our view of a creator who placed textiles in a borderland between art, craftsmanship, architecture and space, and who found in the forms of the past a source to build a fully contemporary language.
