The University of Girona celebrates 35 years looking to the future
The UdG will inaugurate the 2026-2027 academic year with an institutional event that will kick off the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of its creation.
The University of Girona (UdG) will officially inaugurate the 2026-2027 academic year next Friday, October 9, at 12 noon, in the Aula Magna Modest Prats. The event, chaired by the rector of the UdG, Josep Calbó, will have a special significance this year, as it will also serve to give the institutional starting signal to the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the university, born in December 1991.
Under the motto 35 years of UdG in the world , the Girona institution will deploy a program of activities over the coming months aimed at vindicating its trajectory and, at the same time, reflecting on the challenges it will have to face in the future. The commemoration aims to highlight the university's contribution to the academic, scientific, cultural, social and economic development of the Girona regions and its process of projection beyond the territorial scope.
The inaugural lecture of the new course will be given by engineer Mònica Roca i Aparici and will be entitled Space, a world full of values . Mission specialist of the Hypatia II initiative and founder and executive director of the isardSAT group, Roca will discuss the potential of scientific and technological research, with special attention to space activity, as a driver of knowledge and as one of the ways to respond to major global challenges. Her intervention will thus connect the inauguration of the course with a look towards the future based on innovation, science and the ability to generate knowledge at the service of society.
The celebration of the 35th anniversary will begin, however, before the institutional event. As a novelty for the 2026-2027 academic year, the UdG will organize a large welcome party on Thursday, October 8, especially aimed at new students. The day will include a fair of student associations and university services, conceived as a space for new students to learn about the possibilities of participation, support and personal development offered by the institution.
One of the axes of the commemoration will also be the memory of the university itself and the people who have been part of it throughout these three and a half decades. Within this context, Entre converses , a series of five video podcasts that will bring together representatives of different generations and groups of the university community to review the evolution of the UdG and address the challenges posed by its future, is framed.
The first conversation, which will premiere this Thursday, September 24, will bring together the current rector, Josep Calbó, with Pep Nadal, the first rector of the University of Girona. The dialogue will allow us to relate the beginnings of the institution to its current reality and recover different moments of its trajectory.
The following four conversations will expand this intergenerational perspective. They will include the emeritus professor of Latin Philology Mariàngela Vilallonga and the professor of Chemistry Sílvia Osuna; professor Gerardo Boto with the student Genís Cullell and the student of the Josep Torrellas program Emília de Puig; the former head of the International Office Laura Ripoll with the professor of Tourism Jaume Guia; and alumni Juan Fran Cuello de Oro, CEO of LEO Pharma, and Montserrat Jordi, founder of Wikiloc.
