The Virreina seeks new direction while the MACBA begins a new stage with Valentín Roma
The selection process enters the final stretch with a committee made up of representatives from Icub, the artistic field, culture and the university.
Valentín Roma is already facing the present and future of MACBA, in a new stage at the head of one of Barcelona's main contemporary art museums which, as is usually the case in an institution of this size, also raises new questions about its project and its direction. But, beyond MACBA, the other major pending movement on the Barcelona museum map is the handover at the head of La Virreina Centre de la Imatge.
The answer to this question could come in the coming weeks. The selection process is already in its final phase, with the list of admitted people advancing towards the final stages and a commission in charge of evaluating the candidacies. The choice will have to define the profile that will be assumed by the management of a center especially linked to photography, contemporary image, artistic practices and critical thinking.
The commission is made up of Eva Sòria, director of Cultural Sectors at the Barcelona Institute of Culture (Icub); Lluïsa Pedrosa, director of Resources at Icub; Mercedes Torres, head of the Directorate of Economic Planning Services, Selection and Promotion of People Management, Organization and Electronic Administration; the artist Dora García; Maria Lladó, director of the Creation Area at the Institut Ramon Llull; and Andrea Soto, professor of Aesthetics and Art Theory at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
The composition of this body thus incorporates profiles from cultural and institutional management, but also from artistic creation, cultural policies and the academic field. The process now faces the decisive stage before knowing who will assume the responsibility of setting the new course for La Virreina.
