A century of Andalusian art comes together in the Murillo Room
Andalusian artistic creation of the 20th and 21st centuries takes center stage in the new exhibition at the Sala Murillo of the Cajasol Foundation headquarters in Seville. "Andalusian Art from the Bassat Collection at the Cajasol Foundation ," inaugurated on September 17, offers a journey through a century of artistic production via a selection of works from the Bassat Collection, one of the leading private collections in the Spanish art scene. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Fundació Bassat, will be on view until November 28.
Rather than presenting a chronological succession of names and works, the exhibition allows visitors to explore the diverse languages that have defined Andalusian art over the last few decades. The selection brings together different generations of artists and establishes a dialogue between the major transformations of modernity and the proposals developed by contemporary creators, highlighting the plurality of perspectives that permeate artistic creation in Andalusia.
The works on display include those of key figures in the history of Spanish art, such as Pablo Picasso, José Caballero, and Rafael Zabaleta, along with Luis Gordillo and other artists from later generations. The presence of these names allows us to trace some of the major changes experienced by Andalusian art over the last century: from the ruptures linked to the avant-garde movements to the gradual incorporation of new languages, sensibilities, and ways of understanding artistic practice.
In this context, Picasso occupies a central place in the exhibition due to his pivotal role in the renewal of 20th-century art. Alongside him, artists such as José Caballero and Rafael Zabaleta broaden our understanding of Andalusian modernism, while the work of Luis Gordillo introduces other perspectives linked to the evolution of contemporary art. The exhibition is rounded out with more recent creators, whose presence demonstrates the continuity and diversity of an artistic scene that has continued to transform itself across generations.
The exhibition thus celebrates Andalusia's contribution to the history of contemporary art without reducing it to a single aesthetic identity. The coexistence of eras, trends, and styles allows us to observe how tradition and experimentation have maintained a constant dialogue and how Andalusian art has participated in the major transformations of Spanish art during the last century.
With this proposal, the Sala Murillo rejoins the circuit of spaces dedicated to the dissemination and understanding of artistic creation in Andalusia. The collaboration between the Cajasol Foundation and the Bassat Foundation makes it possible to bring to Seville a selection from a collection that, through its holdings, offers a broad perspective on the evolution of modern and contemporary art.
Andalusian art from the Bassat collection at Fundación Cajasol can be visited in the Sala Murillo until November 28, proposing a journey that connects the avant-gardes of the 20th century with the most recent creation and that places, through the Bassat Collection, the diversity of Andalusian art at the center of attention.
