Sol Vidal Massaguer wins the Antoni Vila Casas Award with 'Habitar l'espai'
The Ynglada-Guillot Foundation recognizes the artist for a work that reflects on the relationship between structures, emptiness and the way we inhabit spaces.
The Ynglada-Guillot Foundation has awarded the artist Sol Vidal Massaguer the first Antoni Vila Casas Prize for Habitar l'espai (2024), a work in which the artist explores the relationships between structures and their environment through the dialogue between form and void. The award is endowed with 5,000 euros and is part of the 63rd edition of a competition that has accumulated more than six decades of experience in the promotion and dissemination of contemporary drawing.
The jury also recognized Yan Lou, with a first runner-up prize for The Floating Cabin (2026), and JoanRReig, with a second runner-up prize for Raster (2026). The three distinguished works, along with a selection of the proposals presented, can be seen until September 8 in an exhibition at the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc, which brings together a total of 13 drawings selected by the jury.
In the winning work, Vidal Massaguer presents structures as elements capable of transforming, modifying and constructing new realities, while emptiness becomes a space of tension, balance and possibility. The piece is part of a series that emerged from a continuous process of research and creation, from which the artist reflects on the complexity and uncertainty of the present and on the way we inhabit physical, emotional and symbolic spaces.
The exhibition allows you to discover the works recognized in this edition up close and highlights the diversity of languages and approaches that currently coexist within contemporary drawing. The 13 selected pieces thus offer an overview of the different ways of understanding and approaching this discipline.
More than six decades of vindicating drawing
Established in 1959, the Ynglada-Guillot Foundation Prize is now in its 63rd year, consolidating a trajectory of over sixty years dedicated to stimulating the creation and recognition of drawing. The competition is supported by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc and the Fundació Vila Casas, and is open to both emerging and established artists.
In this edition, the award adopts the name of the Antoni Vila Casas Award, in recognition of the long collaboration between the Ynglada-Guillot and Vila Casas foundations and their shared commitment to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary drawing.
Sol Vidal Massaguer, between drawing, matter and space
Sol Vidal Massaguer has built an artistic career linked to the constant investigation of the languages and possibilities of drawing. His work moves between drawing, painting and engraving, with a special attention to forms, textures, matter and the relationship between occupied and empty space. His creative process combines experimentation with diverse techniques and materials and a particularly sensitive look towards organic forms and the elements that make up our environment.
This desire for exploration is especially present in Habitar l'espai , a work that synthesizes some of the main concerns of his artistic practice. Vidal Massaguer uses structures and voids as elements of construction and transformation, generating a dialogue that invites us to reflect on the way we perceive and experience the spaces around us. A research that, in this piece, transcends the strictly physical realm to also address emotional and symbolic spaces.
