São Paulo will be the guest city of BOG27, the second International Biennial of Art and the City of Bogotá
The second edition of the International Art and City Biennial (BOG27) will feature São Paulo as its guest city of honor, reinforcing the international character of an initiative that seeks to transform contemporary art into a space for cultural exchange and reflection on urban life. The announcement was made at the Centro Felicidad in Chapinero, where Bogotá's Secretary of Culture, Recreation, and Sports, Santiago Trujillo, officially presented the curatorial committee that will lead the next edition of the event.
During the presentation, Trujillo emphasized the role of art as a tool to foster dialogue in a context of growing social polarization. "We are holding this Biennial because we recognize the value of art and the power of culture to help us understand each other, even amidst polarization. The diversity that exists within our territory should unite us, not fracture us," he stated. The Secretary also highlighted the commitment to establishing a biennial capable of projecting Bogotá into the future and strengthening its ties with other cities across the continent.
The organization accompanied the announcement with the launch of a call for proposals program endowed with one billion Colombian pesos, intended to boost the participation of local artists in this new edition.
The first International Biennial of Art and City brought together more than 250 artists from twelve countries in 28 free venues, with a prominent presence of artists from Mexico City as guests of honor. Its legacy extended beyond the exhibition program thanks to various permanent interventions in public spaces, including the restoration of Beatriz González's Auras Anónimas ; the installation of Carlos Castro Arias's Umbral monument; the Tapas por la felicidad mural, created with 80,000 plastic bottle caps in a TransMilenio station; and a collection of 137 artistic interventions distributed throughout the city's transportation system's portals and stations.
The inaugural edition also left as a testament a publication dedicated to the Biennial, made with the support of CAF and edited by Diego Garzón and María Paula Bastidas together with the Taller Agosto studio, reaffirming the project's vocation to generate a legacy both in the urban space and in the editorial memory of contemporary art.
